The Chinese women lead five of the six contests after the qualification competition Sunday at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Americans Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin are 1-2 in the all-around, but the host nation dominated the remaining qualification contests.

After the fourth and final subdivision of competition, the Chinese ranked first in the team competiton and all four individual apparatus. Two-time Olympian Cheng Fei was the top gymnast on vault and floor exercise, Yang Yilin first on uneven bars and Li Shanshan first on balance beam.

The qualification scores do not carry over to the finals, which begin Wednesday with the women's team finals.

France and Brazil competed in the fourth and final women's subdivision and qualified to the final, along with China, the U.S. Russia, Romania, Australia and Japan.

For the first time, the Japanese women will compete in the team final, holding on to eighth place. Koko Tsurumi clinched a berth to the beam final, Japan's first female Olympic finalist since 1984, and the first at a non-boycotted Games since 1964.

The Chinese men were also dominant in Saturday's qualifications, leading in five of the eight categories. The men's team final is Tuesday.
